The month ‘January‘ takes its name from the Latin word Januarius, inspired by Janus, a deity in Roman mythology. Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions, was often depicted with two faces: one looking ahead to the future and the other reflecting on the past. This imagery beautifully represents January as a bridge between the year that has ended and the one just beginning.
January’s inclusion in the Roman calendar can be attributed to King Numa Pompilius around 713 BCE. During his reign, he revised the Roman calendar so that January replaced March as the first month. Before this, the Roman year traditionally began in March and was divided into 10 months. By designating January as the first month, the calendar honored Janus, who was also considered the guardian of gates and doorways. Janus symbolized transitions, including the shift from the old year to the new one.
January reflects the legacy of Janus. It is a time to look back and reflect on the year gone by, while confidently embracing what lies ahead—a month kindling hope, inspiring new aspirations, and heralding fresh beginnings. It is a season of reflection, renewal, and uncharted possibilities. January is where reflection meets resolve, where the past bows gracefully to the promise of the future.
As we step into January, may the New Year bring you success, joy, and boundless possibilities!
