Zen: the art of finding peace within

A student once asked his master, “What is Zen?” The master smiled, poured tea into a cup, and continued pouring until it overflowed. “Like this cup,” he said, “your mind is already full. Empty it, and you will begin to understand.”

The word Zen comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word Chan, which originated from the Sanskrit word Dhyana, meaning meditation or contemplation. Zen is a school of Buddhist philosophy that emphasizes mindfulness, simplicity, self-awareness, and living in the present moment rather than getting lost in thoughts about the past or future.

One of the best-known Zen techniques is Zazen, which means seated meditation. Followed by millions around the world, it involves sitting comfortably, usually cross-legged, keeping the back straight, and focusing on natural breathing. Thoughts may come and go, but rather than getting carried away by them, one simply observes them and gently brings the attention back to the breath.

Zen is not about escaping the world or forcing the mind to become completely silent. It is about understanding our thoughts, developing awareness, and experiencing life with greater clarity.

In a world constantly competing for our attention, Zen reminds us that sometimes the greatest wisdom comes not from doing more, but from being still. Peace is not something we find outside; it is something we discover within.
