Etymology usually gives the literal meaning and evolution of a word. It often provides a glimpse into lesser-known legends as well. Dudhsagar waterfalls, a popular attraction, has both an etymological story and a legend behind its name.
Located on the Vasco Da Gama-Belgaum rail route, Dudhsagar is a must-watch during the monsoon. Literally meaning ‘sea of milk,’ the water streams here cascade down a height of 310 meters. Rich, white and foamy, the water reminds of pure milk rushing down the mountainside. There’s also an interesting legend associated with this waterfall.
As the story goes, a beautiful princess used to bathe here during hot summers. After the bath, she would enjoy jug of sugared milk. One day, as she was completing her usual ritual, she found herself being watched by a handsome prince. Embarrassed by her inadequate attire, the princess poured the sugared milk in front of her to form a curtain and hide her body, while one of the maids rushed to cover her with a dress. The sugared milk poured down the mountainside and continued to flow in torrents as a tribute to the virtue and modesty of the princess! Interesting, isn’t it?
