Have you ever wondered where the name “May” comes from? Like many other months, it goes all the way back to ancient Rome!
The name May comes from Maia (MY-uh), a Roman goddess of spring, growth, and plants. She was believed to help things grow, especially during the warmer months when flowers bloom and trees turn green again. Since May is a time when nature comes back to life, it made perfect sense for the Romans to name this month in her honor.
In Roman mythology, Maia was closely associated with Vulcan, the god of fire and blacksmithing. In Greek mythology, she was one of the Pleiades—daughters of Atlas—and the mother of Hermes, the messenger god.
So next time you see flowers blossoming or feel the warm May sun, remember you’re celebrating Maia’s special month!
fascinating..I must say.
