Why are Herman Miller chairs so expensive?

A Herman Miller office chair can cost several times more than an ordinary office chair. Yet businesses and professionals around the world continue to pay a premium for one. The reason goes beyond the brand name: it lies in more than a century of furniture-making heritage, thoughtful engineering, innovative materials, and a scientific approach to human comfort.

A history dating back to 1905
Herman Miller traces its origins to 1905, when the Star Furniture Company was established in Zeeland, Michigan. In 1923, D.J. De Pree and his father-in-law, Herman Miller, led the purchase of the Michigan Star Furniture Company; Herman Miller acquired the majority of shares, and the business was renamed the Herman Miller Furniture Company. De Pree became its first president and is widely credited with shaping the company’s identity and commitment to design.

Over the decades, Herman Miller collaborated with some of the world’s most influential designers, including George Nelson, Charles and Ray Eames, and Robert Propst. Its reputation grew through furniture that combined functionality, aesthetics, and innovation, helping establish the company as a pioneer in modern office furniture.

What makes the chair special?
One of Herman Miller’s most celebrated products is the Aeron Chair, introduced in 1994. Designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick, it challenged the conventional idea that office chairs needed thick foam cushions and leather upholstery.

Instead, the Aeron introduced a distinctive breathable suspension material called Pellicle, which distributes body weight across the seat and back while allowing air to circulate. The current version uses 8Z Pellicle technology, with eight zones of varying tension and stiffness designed to provide targeted support. Features such as adjustable PostureFit SL lumbar and sacral support, adjustable armrests, and Harmonic 2 Tilt allow users to customize their seating position and move naturally while working.

The engineering is equally significant. Its frame, precision-fitted components, adjustable mechanisms, and durable materials are designed for years of continuous use. The chair is available in three sizes—A, B, and C—to accommodate a wide range of body types and comes with a 12-year warranty. Today’s Aeron is composed of more than 50% recycled material, including ocean-bound plastic.

Why does it cost so much?
The premium price reflects decades of research, collaboration with renowned designers, material innovation, engineering, manufacturing quality, and rigorous product testing. It also reflects Herman Miller’s investment in ergonomic research and long-term durability. Rather than treating a chair as disposable office furniture, the company positions it as a long-term investment in workplace comfort and productivity.

It’s worth nothing that it’s not the appearance or brand prestige that makes a Herman Miller product expensive; it’s the thinking, engineering, and attention to the human body that go into its design. It is furniture conceived not merely to support someone sitting, but to support someone working for hours every day.
